Day 1 (morning) proceedings of Athi Rudra Maha Yagna, Navarathri Homa and Durga Pooja
Athi Rudra Maha Yagna performed for World Peace commences at Muddenahalli
Tuesday, October 13 – Morning: It is said the Athi Rudra Maha Yagna is the highest form of worship of Lord Shiva. The Yagna is being performed for the purpose of world peace and prosperity in Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli, between October 13 and October 23. Navarathri Homa and Durga Puja are also being performed simultaneously at the same venue.
The Athi Rudram involves 14,641 Rudrams, which consists on Namakas and Chamakas. Namaka recited once along with the recital of Chamaka once, constitutes one Rudram.
Day one of the Athi Rudra Maha Yagna commenced at 3:00am amidst much fanfare at Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli. A grand procession of over 140 ritwiks, led by traditional nadaswaram and Chief Priest Sri Nanjunda Dikshit, with the ceremonial lingam made their way from Bhagawan Baba's residence to the newly erected Yagna Shala, in front of the Sri Sathya Sai Hrudaya Mandiram.
The Yagna Shala was brimming with people dressed in festive finery, even at the wee hours of the morning. Spiritual seekers from many countries had gathered to witness the sacred events of the day and participate in this great yagna, performed for world peace and harmony.
After the Dwara puja, the lingam was brought into the beautifully decorated yagna shala. The ceremonial lamp was lit by the secretary of the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust, Sri Narayan Rao. The Maha Ganapathy puja was followed by the Vastu Puja and then the Varuna puja, thus cleansing the surroundings in which the yagna is being performed.
Sri Nanjunda Dikshit gave an illuminating talk on the significance of the Athi Rudra Maha Yagna, before commencing the rituals for the morning. Everyone basked in the holy vibrations of the Veda chanting by the esteemed ritwiks. The atmosphere was electric in the midst of the ritualistic proceedings.
Puja of Devi Durga was officiated simultaneously at 8am as Abhahan (Invitation) of the Goddess. The entire place was reverberating with sacred chants of the mantras. Mantras are potent sounds that derive their power from the frequencies of their own vibration. A huge benefit of chanting mantras consists of bringing ourselves and our surroundings, to a powerful source of high vibration that cleanses and purifies.
The milk white Amrita Shila lingam was ceremoniously bathed in water. A beautifully decorated cow and her calf were welcomed into the Yaga Shala with traditional music, worshipped and then given away to a Brahmin. Gifting of a cow is considered one of the highest and holiest acts of charity. Various other rituals followed in accordance with the shastras, before the curtains came down on the proceedings of the morning.
