Swami: Mientras que el canto del nombre es la más fácil y la forma más sencilla de garantizar que no se crea ninguna más karma negativo, el primer paso es no permitir que usted mismo para participar en actividades que van a crear más karma negativo, acumulando en el ya existente la deuda que debe ser pagada. Entonces ¿por qué debe usted participar en Seva? Hay una historia de Hanuman y Vibheeshana. Vibheeshana dijo "yo quiero tener el darshan de Rama. He estado cantando su nombre durante tanto tiempo, pero no he tenido su contemplación. ¿Por que es esto entonces?"

Hanuman respondió: "Sólo se le canto del nombre del Señor, pero no participar en el servicio del Señor." Ambos son necesarios - como las dos alas de un pájaro. Por un lado, cantas, por el otro, lo hace el servicio. Cuando ambos se unen, se convierte en cerca del Señor. Cerca del Señor significa cerca de su naturaleza divina, por lo que es muy fácil.

No es posible que una persona a darse cuenta de la Divinidad sin haber participado en el servicio. Nunca ha sucedido y nunca puede suceder. En el momento en que te das cuenta de la Unidad, la Divinidad dentro y por fuera, que se sumergirá inmediatamente en servicio; se convertirá en segunda naturaleza para usted. Usted comenzará automáticamente hacerlo sin cualquier persona que necesite decirle. Por otra parte, acaba de empezar a hacerlo de manera que se convierte en su naturaleza. Ambas formas pueden trabajar: namasmarana por un lado, y el servicio de la otra. Ambos son necesarios.

Muchos se preguntan, '¿Qué están haciendo los rishis, sentado en cuevas en el Himalaya remotas, mientras que todo el pensamiento y el canto? ¿Cuál es el servicio que están haciendo para la gente?' No subestime ellos. Usted ve el mundo sólo de una dimensión o el ángulo, con la forma en que se mire. Lo que están haciendo a su nivel, es totalmente diferente. El usuario no puede entender que están guiando y ayudando a muchas personas debido a que han llegado a un estado en el que no es necesario un cuerpo físico para ir y guiar. Todavía lo hacen un montón de Seva. Como ya he dicho, no es posible que alguien se han dado cuenta Atma sin hacer servicio. ¡Es imposible!

Es una segunda naturaleza para una persona realizada a estar continuamente ocupado en el servicio. La otra manera de abordar esto es participar en servicio todo el tiempo, y se dará cuenta el Alma. Ya sea que llegue a la primera forma o de otra manera. Todavía se llega al mismo lugar. Por lo tanto, insisto en que namasmarana haciendo no es suficiente. Si usted realmente siente la divinidad dentro y por fuera, en su cuerpo, la mente, los sentidos y habilidades, entonces usted va a utilizarlos para servir a los demás y servir a la divina, que está dentro de cada uno.

Question: Good afternoon, Swami. I want to ask a question about namasmarana and meditation. The speakers were saying that doing good is most important. How important is namasmarana (chanting the Lord's name) and meditation in getting rid of negative karma? As stated by most of them, we are bound by karma. Do prayers, chanting the name of the Lord and doing meditation help a lot in getting rid of past karma?

Swami: Whilst chanting the name is the easiest and the most straightforward way to ensure that you do not create any more negative karma, the first step is to not allow yourself to engage in activities that will create more negative karma, accumulating on the already existing debt that must be paid. Therefore, chanting the name will ensure the mind is pure, the tongue is pure and the deeds are pure. That way, you will not create any more negative karma.

Nevertheless, how will you reconcile all that has happened in the past? You can ensure that it does not happen any further, by engaging in all kinds of sadhana – meditation and similar activities. However, what has already happened in the past requires one to still experience that karma. By chanting the Lord's name, you still cannot rid yourself of all that you have done; you must still go through. However, by the Lord's Grace, it will become bearable for you. Even if you must go through whatever it is, it will become bearable.

The Lord's name will become like shoes which will help you walk the same difficult road, but with greater ease. To that extent, yes, the Lord's name and all else helps.

Then why must you engage in seva? There's a story of Hanuman and Vibheeshana. Vibheeshana said "I want to have darshan of Rama. I have been chanting His name for so long, but I have not had His darshan. Why is it so?"

Hanuman replied, "You are only chanting the name of the Lord, but not engaging in the service of the Lord." Both are required – like the two wings of a bird. On one side, you chant, on the other, you do service. When both come together, you become close to the Lord. Close to the Lord means close to your divine nature, thus making it very easy.

It is not possible for a person to realise Divinity without having engaged in service. It has never happened and can never happen. The moment you realise the Oneness, the Divinity within and without, you will immediately plunge into service; it will become second nature to you. You will automatically start doing it without anyone needing to tell you. On the other hand, just start doing it so that it becomes your nature. Both ways can work: namasmarana on the one side, and service on the other. Both are required.

Many wonder, 'What are the rishis doing, sitting in caves in the remote Himalayas, all the while thinking and chanting? What is the service that they are doing for the people?' Do not underestimate them. You see the world only from one dimension or angle, with the way you look at it. What they are doing at their level, is totally different. You may not understand that they are guiding and helping many people because they have reached a state where they do not need a physical body to go and guide. They still do a lot of seva. As I have said, it is not possible for someone to have realised Atma without doing service. It is impossible!

It is second nature for a realised person to be continually engaged in service. The other way to approach this is to engage in service all the time, and you will realise the Atma. Either you reach it the first way or the other way. You will still reach the same place. Therefore, I insist that doing namasmarana is not enough. If you really feel divinity within and without, in your body, mind, senses and abilities, then you will use them to serve others and serve the Divine, which is within everyone.
