No hubo ninguna deportación.

Sai Ram,

This is an investigative account of what transpired in Nigeria.

SATHYAMEVA JAYATHE
by B.S.VijayaSai
Alumnus and former lecturer at SSSIHL

After this confusion about the Nigeria incident publicized first by the letter and then by the Anantapur edition of the newspaper which repeated what the letter stated without verification and after I heard a different story from some of my friends here, I personally decided to investigate into the heart of the matter.

In my quest for the TRUTH, I used my contacts with native Nigerian devotees who are both pro and anti this phenomenon (I am in touch with both), with members of the troupe which includes my former roommates at PN, my former Sai Symphony senior at PN, my former senior colleague at SSSIHL for getting independent accounts. I personally spoke to these contacts.

After drafting my understanding of the entire episode, I sent the written draft to my contact in the Indian embassy.  He sent my draft and checked with his colleagues who were present during the episode and confirmed that it was the fact of the matter. He even corrected a few lines of my draft before sending it.
The facts of the matter are as below and one is more than free to investigate and know the truth for oneself.

(Drafted and verified portion begins)

1) Was it a complaint for which there was an arrest warrant issued to the members of the team? No.
It was only a petition, not even a registered complaint, that too from a highly influential person because of which the police had to respond. There was no arrest warrant.

The police only requested the team to accompany them to the nearest Enugu State police station for giving a statement in response to the charges mentioned in the petition.

Since it was a petition made by a highly placed person, police investigated and therefore respecting the police and its authority, the team obliged to visit the nearest police station at Enugu in their own private vehicles and gave statements in response to the questions asked.
After all the questions were satisfactorily responded to and written statements submitted to the investigating officer, the team went back and slept at the hotel where they were staying.

2) Was there any further investigation in Lagos? Yes.

The next day the enquiry continued in Lagos, mainly because:

A) The petition was filed at Lagos and was under the jurisdiction of Lagos Police authorities.
B) Both the parties needed to be called and investigated as per the protocol.

Therefore even the petitioner Mr.Hathiramani was summoned for questioning on the issue. He came along with some other members of the Sri Sathya Sai International Organization (SSIO).

The Muddenahalli team travelled as scheduled earlier to Lagos from Enugu and was received by the authorities of the Indian High Commission who accompanied the team to the police headquarters.

The meeting was attended by members of both the parties and the senior members of Nigerian police as well as Indian high commission. It was an open, dignified and one-to-one meeting where both the parties were questioned about the charges and given an opportunity to explain.

The senior members of the Muddenahalli team submitted that in His lifetime, Baba founded many organizations and institutions of public service and SSIO was not the only one.

Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust founded in early 70s, of which Bhagawan Himself was the founder president and

Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Institutions which were taken over by Baba in Late 70s wherein He was the sole Trustee, are still functional and continue to further the mission of free healthcare, educare and sociocare to the needy around the world without any discrimination of caste, creed, religion, status, sex or nationality.

The commissioner heard it patiently.

The submissions made by the petitioner and his team (SSIO) as mentioned below were proven invalid:

A) No one can enter their country in the name of Sathya Sai Baba without the permission of the organization (SSIO).
This did not hold water as it might be applicable to the official members of the organization but cannot be enforced upon devotees.

B) Sri Sathya Sai International organization's name was used by the entourage to collect money.
This was proven totally false as not a Naira of donation was raised from any members of the organization. Also the entourage did not use the organization's name or symbol or logo anywhere.

(My observation: In fact, the first free hospital built in Nigeria in Swami's name was largely supported by devotees outside Nigeria and the country has only benefited from the visit).

C) "Sathya Sai Baba's name cannot be used without the permission of SSIO", was also baseless as Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is prayed to as "Godman"[sic]  (changed by my contact at the embassy from original word "God" in my draft) and is worshipped by many and therefore no one can claim rights over it.

The petitioner tried to say that Madhusudan calls himself as Baba or Bhagawan which Madhusudan completely denied as he considers himself only as a servant of Baba and has never made such claims as suggested by the petitioner.

When the person from Indian high commission commented earlier that Sathya Sai Baba is dead, even the petitioner strongly objected by saying, "Baba is not dead but has only left his mortal coil."[sic]

Regarding receiving messages from "the Late Baba" [sic] and behaving as if Baba was still around, Madhusudan responded,

"Baba is my Guru and God and I too pray to Him for guidance just as millions do. He guides me also, just as He guides other devotees. He is a divine personality and He is always there. I convey the guidance I receive to the people for whom it is meant and it is up to them to follow it or not". [sic]

The Commissioner, therefore, after hearing both the sides concluded that: "Just like Jesus, Baba is worshipped by many. However some subscribe to certain organizations whereas others worship Him in individual ways similar to Christians following either Catholic or Protestant or any other order of the church or just worshipping Jesus at home. This is an individual's choice and the law has nothing to do with it." [sic]

The commissioner further added that he is not interested in what belief one follows or what religion one propagates as that is not a crime. However, he was only interested in knowing if there was any laundering of money through his country and people which could have been misused for purposes that jeopardize the security of his nation and its citizens.

The contentious case in hand to which the SSIO objected was of a free hospital built by the foundation of Father Charles Ogada for which donations came from around the world.

All the statements of accounts were submitted and finally father Ogada was also relieved as no issues were found with the donations received.

5) What was the role of Indian Embassy?

The Muddenahalli team had to seek the support of the Indian embassy as they had valid visas and documentation and were not engaged in anything unlawful. The Indian embassy worked throughout and took charge of the situation.

The team members boarded their flights as planned earlier without any changes and came back just as regular travellers.

The high commission was kind to see them off as a matter of courtesy at the airport to ensure their safe travel back home. There was no deportation at all.

After the discussion, the members of the visiting team and the hosts were respectfully allowed to leave, only with a request that if need be they should be available to respond to any further questions, which the members respectfully agreed to and assured their cooperation in finding the Truth.

(That concludes my drafted and verified report)

The team appreciated the dedication of the officials of the Indian High commission as they were so very committed to safeguard the Indian citizens and their rights overseas.
This is the truth of the matter.

Now here are my observations and some points for all of us to ponder upon.
1) The words used by the petitioner such as, "sneaking in to Nigeria", are questioning the very authority and decision of the Nigerian and Indian embassies in granting the visas to the team.

2) The words such as 'arrest' and 'deportation' are questioning the very actions of the Indian High commission which 'safely and with dignity' helped their people leave Nigeria as respectable citizens of India just as scheduled and did their duty in protecting their citizens from false allegations and undue harassment in a foreign land.

3) The mention of words like 'crying and pleading not guilty like any other criminal', suggesting that there was a crime when there was none found, is overstepping the conclusions of the respectable Nigerian police commissioner who found the allegations false and baseless.

And finally irresponsibly printing the 'untruth' and 'promoting falsehood' on the sacred letter head of the 'Sri Sathya Sai International Organisations' is belittling the very name of the Master.

One is free to verify the facts of the matter for oneself and use one's better judgment to form an opinion, instead of listening to a one-sided story.

Sathyameva Jayate!!! Dharmo Rakshatih Rakshithaah!!!
Truth alone triumphs and righteousness protects those who protect it.
