Discurso para la Convocación

Muy querido y bienamado Swami, Venerado Canciller de esta sagrada Universidad Sri Sathya Sai, pranams a Tus Divinos Pies de Loto. Estimado Vicecanciller Vishwanath Pandit, distinguidos miembros del cuerpo administrativo y de la facultad de la Universidad, respetados invitados, amados estudiantes, hermanos y hermanas.
Le ofrezco estas breves palabras a Swami y ruego por que Su Amor fluya a través de ellas.
Con profunda modestia agradezco esta invitación para dirigirme a ustedes con motivo de esta especial vigésimoctava Convocación de la Universidad Sri Sathya Sai. Considero a Swami como divino – omnipresente, nuestro constante amigo y compañero.
¿Cuándo o dónde ha existido un tal Canciller que esté con nosotros en esta vida y en la próxima – guiándonos hacia la ventura y el amor? Nos hace humildes el hablar frente a Él – es el mayor honor de mi vida.

Clamando por ver – por entender la oscuridad
mas sintiéndose separado – y perdido.
¿Vendrás Tu hacia mí?

Y entonces llegaste tan inesperadamente –

preocupado de la impermanencia

para verte por primera vez.
Y oculto entre 20 millones de gentes –

Hoy me dirijo a estudiantes que se gradúan de esta universidad muy especial – y me gustaría incluir también a todos los devotos de Dios, porque en nuestros corazones todos somos estudiantes de Swami
¿Qué es lo que estamos aprendiendo aquí que no he encontrado en ninguna otra parte?
Hemos experimentado a Swami salvándonos amorosamente, en el último minuto, en dondequiera que estemos – mostrando Su dominio sobre el tiempo y el lugar.
Viendo a Swami materializar un objeto es testimoniar la verdad de que la "Creación – el universo, es una proyección de la voluntad de Dios – carece de una realidad básica." Swami lo escribió así en el 'Bhagavatha Vahini'.
¿Puede la ciencia moderna comenzar a imaginar siquiera esta realidad?
Nuestro conocimiento acerca del amor de Swami y el dominio del tiempo, el espacio y la materia, no es una idea ni conocimiento libresco – es un saber nacido de una real experiencia vivida con Swami – es conocimiento práctico. No hay tesoro terrenal que pueda comprarlo. No obstante les es dado gratuitamente por Swami. ¡Es Su preciosa inestimable gracia!
¡Sí! ¡Dios existe! Su corazón es blando como la mantequilla – nos ama, y quiere nuestro amor – el amor se funde en el amor – Yo soy Dios.
La mente es la clave – es la causa de nuestra servidumbre o liberación – sigan a la conciencia, ella nos lleva a servirle a la sociedad – ¡a través del servicio encontramos a Dios en la sociedad y nos realizamos!
Estudiantes, ustedes son el sagrado depósito de las enseñanzas de Swami – prontos a comprobar este sacro conocimiento en el crisol de la vida diaria. ¿Cómo hemos de vivir estas enseñanzas? Aquí va una historia.
En febrero del 2005, Swami materializó un anillo de oro para mi mujer. Tenía una superficie rectangular y desde un lado veíamos la inscripción Om.
Notamos que desde diferentes ángulos, la misma línea se veía como palabras escritas en diferentes idiomas. Una lucía como arábico. Swami dijo que eran nombres de Dios.
Supe que el misterio de los diferentes nombres se develaría con el tiempo.
Un amigo muy cercano enfermó – su mujer era discapacitada. No podían cuidar de sí mismos. Se sumieron en la desesperación.
Nosotros viajamos 2000 millas – para trabajar árduamente por una semana aseando su hogar y trasladándoles a un lugar seguro. Su casa estaba en un tal desorden y tan sucia que tuvimos que usar máscaras protectoras mientras trabajábamos allí. Esta es la condición del hombre hoy en día – vivimos en una tierra, agua, aire y relaciones sociales contaminados – ¡llegamos a enfermarnos!
Swami estaba en nuestros pensamientos, palabras y acciones – mientras le devolvíamos la limpieza y la pureza al entorno, y en nuestros impulsos veíamos señales de la divinidad de Swami – en las sonrisas en los rostros de nuestros queridos amigos.
Mientras estábamos en el mesón de recepción de nuestro motel, el empleado se fijó en el anillo de Sharon – "¿Sabe lo que significa?", le preguntó ella. "Es el nombre de Dios, Alá", dijo – el servicio produjo intuición.
Subsecuentemente fuimos aprendiendo el significado de cada palabra, mientras girábamos el anillo en diferentes ángulos. Desde un ángulo era Om; desde otro, Alá; desde otro, Yo soy Yo; desde otro El, un nombre de Dios en la religión judía. Swami estaba enseñando – diferentes nombres mas un Dios y que, al servir vemos nuestra unidad en la diversidad.
La sabiduría se hacía más profunda a lo largo del servicio.
Sharon y yo fuimos a San Petersburgo para hablar en la Conferencia Nacional Sai de Rusia, hace aproximadamente un año y medio. Swami enseña auto-administración – administración familiar – servicio a la comunidad local – e incluso servicio en la comunidad mundial.
Relatamos la historia del anillo y mostramos fotos en una pantalla grande. Los musulmanes en la audiencia se emocionaron profundamente y aplaudieron. Se sentían felices al ver que Swami les había reconocido al materializar su más santa palabra. Nos sentimos inmensamente felices de poder desempeñar un papel en entregar felicidad.
El Prof. Jafar Malaev de Dagestan lucía la más amplia de las sonrisas entre todos los asistentes. Yo nunca había oido algo sobre Dagestan. ¿Cómo podría haber conocido al Prof. Jafar como no fuera en la creciente órbita del amor de Swami?
Era musulmán y Canciller de una gran universidad con una matrícula de 30.000 alumnos. Se sentía impresionado por el amor de Swami y Sus programas educacionales. "¿Cómo puedo llevar sus enseñanzas a mi universidad?" preguntó. Swami dijo simplemente, "Usted es el educador – descúbralo por sí mismo." ¡Hay una gran lección para nosotros encerrada aquí! Debemos integrar las enseñanzas a través del poder de la práctica – depende de nosotros. La conciencia integrada constante – las manos en la sociedad y la cabeza en la floresta – ¡intégrenlas ambas en una!
Jafar dijo, "Debemos elevarnos por sobre la ira, la violencia y la venganza, si hemos de sobrevivir. Problemas como los del Medio Oriente entre los Palestinos y los Israelíes deben ser resueltos con amor." Luego, tomando mi mano en la suya y mirándome profundamente a los ojos, dijo, "Debemos dejar de luchar y aprender a amarnos mutuamente – Sandweiss yo te amo." Me sentí sinceramente emocionado y respondí, "y Jafar, yo te amo a tí." ¡El anillo de Swami nos había reunido!
Jafar es musulmán y yo soy judío. Ruego por que este amor generado por Sai – entre en el secular conflicto entre palestinos e israelíes – musulmanes y judíos – en todas las fricciones y facciones – sane nuestros corazones y nos traiga la paz. ¿Será posible?
Sólo a través del amor de Swami – y nosotros somos Sus mensajeros. Adquirimos confianza en la posibilidad de que el amor puro pueda traer la paz mundial – ¡al ver como se ha manifestado ya este amor!
Cuando encontré a Swami por primera vez hace 37 años, no podía dejar de pensar y de escribir acerca de Él. Me sentía tan conmovido por ver a la conciencia y al amor infinitos en un ser – y por saber que Él es un reflejo del Sí Mismo. Aprendí que yo soy Dios.
Mas cuando les conté a mis colegas psiquiatras en la Universidad que yo era Dios, pensaron que había perdido el juicio en la India. ¡En realidad, había encontrado allá mi corazón! Las cosas no mejoraron cuando les dije, "Esperen, esperen – ustedes también son Dios." La psiquiatría moderna tiene aún un largo camino por recorrer.
Luego aparecieron los templos de la sanación – los Hospitales de Super Especialidades con su mensaje de pureza y de compasión. – Cuán rápidamente aparecieron, cuán bellos son, cuán eficiente y eficazmente expresan el amor de Swami por los pobres y los necesitados. Como nos impulsan a nosotros a ser también instrumentos de este amor.
En una era en que la medicina ha sido contaminada por el deseo por dinero y posición – el mensaje de los hospitales de Swami – de pureza, santidad y servicio, ya está siendo escuchado y practicado. Hace un mes atrás, por ejemplo, participé en la Primera Conferencia Médica Internacional Sai en un gran centro de convenciones en California, USA. Fue organizada por el Comité Médico Internacional Sri Sathya Sai – Presidente el Dr. Narenbdra Reddy. Swami le dijo al Dr. Reddy que Él iba a dirigir la reunión – y en verdad, fue brillante.
Cerca de 30 talentosos oradores – algunos presidentes de departamentos – presidentes de sociedades, tanto de los Estados Unidos como del resto del mundo – le hablaron a un grupo internacional de alrededor de 450 médicos, acerca del amor de Swami – y de como ellos lo integraban a sus prácticas, clínicas y campamentos gratuitos, y programas de asistencia a desastres. Algunos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas habían estado en áreas tan devastadas como Darfur, Somalía, Kosovo, pobrísimas aldeas en Rusia, Africa e India, sirviendo a los más sufrientes de nuestros hermanos y hermanas – y con el siempre presente apoyo de Swami.
Swami está produciendo una transformación no sólo en la medicina, sino también en todas las relaciones y, especialmente en la educación. He visto florecer esta Universidad. Ví su comienzo, cuando no había más que líneas en la arena que señalaban donde cavar. He visto elevarse los edificios – les he visto a ustedes en los corredores y las aulas – los laboratorios y los albergues estudiantiles – en los campos de deporte y durante los darshans, cuando se escurren rápidamente para lograr un sitio cerca de Swami. – He sido amigo desde un comienzo con los Vicecancilleres. El primero, el Dr. V. Gokak, se sentó a nuestra mesa de cocina en los Estados Unidos enseñándole a nuestras cuatro pequeñas hijas la oración del alimento.
Y ahora estoy frente a ustedes en los momentos de esta vigésimoctava Convocatoria – habiendo visto una tal transformación de los edificios, los programas y los estudiantes. ¡Y ahora esta Universidad está considerada entre las mejores de toda la India!
Cuán estimulante es ver sus rostros radiantes y sentir el anhelo por servir en sus corazones. Ustedes son la prueba
que la integración de educación secular y espiritual no solamente es posible – no solamente es práctica – ¡sino que es esencial si hemos de sobrevivir!
Queridos estudiantes, estén siempre vigilantes en cuanto a asirse firmemente a Swami mientras enfrentamos los enormes problemas actuales.
La pobreza en el amor y el aumento del egoísmo les están produciendo grandes sufrimientos a nuestras mentes y a la Madre Tierra. La angustia, la depresión, el odio, la confusión, la pérdida de la razón y del propósito se muestran sin freno. La producción y el consumo insensatos han producido destrucción y contaminación.
Más de un billón de personas sufren ya de la escasez de agua limpia – lanzamos diariamente 93 millones de toneladas de desechos tóxicos a la atmósfera. – Esta acción insensata y egoísta nos afecta a todos. – Los esquimales Inuit de Groenlandia, por ejemplo, se cuentan entre los que tienen las más altas concentraciones de estas toxinas en sus cuerpos. Están a merced nuestra.
Estamos usando actualmente 20% más de recursos de los que la Tierra puede regenerar. Con las crecientes economías mundiales y si cada cual consumiera en la medida que se da en los Estados Unidos, se requeriría de cinco planetas del tamaño de la Tierra para satisfacer nuestras adicciones. ¡Pero el sumar cuatro planetas más no puede ser nuestra meta!
Enfrentamos las amenazas de guerra nuclear, de genocidios, de racismo, de fundamentalismo, de estrechez, de terrorismo. ¿Cómo puede cambiar esta espantosa situación?
Únicamente a través del amor de Swami – y nosotros somos Sus mensajeros.
Nuestro lugar está con Swami – el ser dignos instrumentos de Su amor. El asunto no es el que no conozcamos las enseñanzas. ¡Swami las ha colocado firmemente en nuestros corazones! El problema reside en ir perdiendo a la larga, la voluntad y la determinación – en el conseguir y olvidar nuestra cercana relación con Swami. Swami describe esta cercanía, ya hace años, en una carta a Sus estudiantes.
"El ave con ustedes – las alas Conmigo,
El pie en ustedes – el camino Conmigo,
El ojo con ustedes – la forma Conmigo,
El objeto con ustedes – el sueño Conmigo,
El mundo con ustedes – el cielo Conmigo,
Así somos libres, así nos encontramos,
así comenzamos y así terminamos,
Ustedes en Mí y Yo en ustedes.
¡Sean felices!"
No debemos obtener y olvidar los dones que Swami ha otorgado – debido a egos heridos, a tareas intimidantes o a esfuerzos prolongados. No hay excusas para vagabundear – estoy demasiado cansado – es demasiado inconveniente – mi carrera consume todo mi tiempo – tengo que hacer dinero – no estoy de ánimo – estoy confuso – se me olvidó – tántas razones para la inacción.
No, no – la senda del amor puro es demasiado importante. Más bien hemos de reconocer nuestro rol y responder al llamado – como Swami le escribiera una vez a los estudiantes,
"Estudiantes . . .
Vean la vida como un campo de batalla destinado al heroísmo y al coraje.
Ustedes son los hijos de Dios, héroes en acción, grandes soldados en la era de Kali. – La madre está esperando su llegada al escenario."
Afírmense bien y estén listos para servir. Aquí viene una historia acerca del amor abnegado siempre pronto a servir a Swami.
El Dr. Jack Hislop llegó a conocer a Swami y Le sirvió fielmente por los últimos 30 años de su vida. Fue el primer Presidente del Concejo Sathya Sai de los USA y escribió dos libros acerca de Swami, "Conversaciones con Sathya Sai Baba" y "Mi Baba y yo". Swami me contó que durante sus últimos 15 años, Hislop estuvo en constante meditación en Swami.
Hislop era un hombre fuerte y habló por todo el mundo sobre Swami. Cuando se acercaba su fin y se había vuelto débil, fue invitado a hablar en Japón. Como estaba tan débil, le escribió a Swami preguntando si había de ir.
Swami respondió en una palabra, "¡Vé!" Parecía como si Swami estuviera pidiendo una entrega total – ¡el entregarle
todo a Él y aceptar que Él es el hacedor!
Aunque Hislop casi no podía estar de pie, obedeció a nuestro Señor – y, asombrosamente, dictó 35 charlas en 10 días. A veces Swami levanta a un devoto como para desempeñar un rol de modelo de servicio sacrificatorio. Creo que Hislop fue uno de estos devotos.
Hislop volvió a casa debilitado y endeble. Llamé una mañana – dijo que había sufrido una caída en la noche y estaba demasiado débil para levantarse – fue así que estuvo tendido por horas en el suelo. Me alarmé y le llevé de inmediato al hospital. Descubrimos que tenía cáncer y que moriría muy pronto.
El Dr. Hislop no le temía a la muerte – Swami era su bastón y apoyo. Cuando se le preguntó qué había aprendido de su larga vida espiritual y qué era lo que le prestaba fuerzas ahora, dijo sin vacilar, "He practicado muchas sendas – meditación, servicio, desapego – mas de todas las sendas, la más duradera y aquella de la que me estoy aferrando ahora ¡es la devoción! Todas las demás – la meditación, el servicio – se han retirado. ¡Lo que queda es la devoción! Veo a Swami – y sé que Él está en mí – y que yo estoy en Él."
El amor puro es sumamente precioso. Es el alfa y el omega – el principio y el fin. Cuando se elimina todo lo transitorio, queda el amor. Cuando se ha secado el pozo y todos los sapos se van, no queda sino el puro amor de Dios para hacernos compañía. Swami nos dice que la Creación, la Preservación y la Disolución emanan de este amor puro. El amor puro le presta belleza al carácter – armonía al hogar – y paz al mundo. Y Swami ha venido a darnos este amor puro – como Él lo ha dicho – "He venido a encender la lámpara del amor en sus corazones, a velar por que día tras día brille con mayor esplendor."
Swami ha derramado con rebosante abundancia Su puro amor sobre mí, hoy. Me ha concedido el honor de ser Invitado Principal y la oportunidad de hablarles. La invitación me causó un impacto. Sé que hay muchos mejor calificados – mas Swami me concedió el honor – una expresión de Su puro amor – un amor que opera allende el ámbito de la comprensión humana – tan sencillo y simple como eso. Me siento inmensamente agradecido por Tu puro amor, Swami. Gracias.
Podríamos preguntarnos si el amor de Swami realmente puede traer paz a nuestro perturbado mundo. Una cosa es ver la milagrosa aparición de Hospitales de Super Especialidades, gigantescos proyectos de agua potable, revolucionarios programas educacionales, centros espirituales por todo el mundo practicando servicio y amor – mas algo completamente distinto es considerar realmente que Swami puede en verdad lograr la paz mundial. Aunque Swami ha dicho que en un breve tiempo tendremos paz en el mundo – parece casi imposible. Pero permitámonos estar abiertos a la posibilidfad de esta imposibilidad – ¡porque Swami puede hacer cualquier cosa! Debemos prepararnos seriamente para el momento en que Swami elija a cualquiera de nosotros de entre la multitud, como lo hiciera conmigo hoy, y nos coloque en una posición de poder influir realmente en los eventos mundiales. Al cantar Su nombre, servir a Sus hijos, estudiar Su sabiduría eterna – debemos prepararnos para el día en que Él nos eljia.
Mi mujer le preguntó una vez a Swami si Él podría salvar al mundo. Él dijo, "Medio salvar, medio seva". ¡El Seva – puro amor en acción!
Swami, mientras nos acercamos al año que lleva a Tu 85º cumpleaños, ruego por un año de puro Amor – permite que Tu gloria brille sobre nuestros corazones como un millón de soles – dejando nuestro corazón en llamas – Hasta que Tu y yo seamos lo mismo – Permítenos caminar con Tu amor en nuestros corazones – Tu nombre entre nuestros labios – Tu mano en la nuestra – y de la mano – medio salvar, medio seva – Permítenos traerle honor a esta santa Universidad y a Tu sacro nombre – e irradiar amor hacia el mundo – como para que las montañas resuenen con amor – los cielos canten con amor – las estrellas brillen con amor – los poetas rimen con amor – y todos los seres de todos los mundos sean felices.
Estudiantes, sé del amor en sus corazones, lo comparto – les he oído gorjear frente a Swami – Swami, Swami, Swami – Swami, Swami Swami – Le he visto emocionado por el anhelo de ustedes. Ruego por que Él escuche este lastimero clamor de pichones a punto de volar – y nos bendiga con Sus preciosas palabras de luz.

Dearest Beloved Swami, Revered Chancellor of this sacred Sri Sathya Sai University, pranams at Your divine lotus feet. Esteemed Vice Chancellor Vishwanath Pandit, distinguished members of the governing body and faculty of the University, respected guests, beloved students, brothers and sisters,
I offer these few words to Swami and pray that His love flows through them.
I am deeply humbled by the invitation to address you at this special 28th Convocation of the Sri Sathya Sai University. I consider Swami to be divine-- omnipresent, our constant friend and companion.
Whenever -- wherever has there been such a Chancellor who is with us in this life and the next – leading us to bliss and love? It is humbling to speak before Him -- it is the greatest honor of my life.
A short poem
There is a young tender heart somewhere
Out there in the dark,
Crying to see -- to understand the dark
But feeling apart -- and lost
Will You come to me?
Will You come to me?
Can I see You?
Can I touch You?
Can I hear You?
Can life be all right
Because of You?
And then You came so unexpected –

Today I am addressing graduating students of this very special university -- and I would also like to include all devotees of God, because in our hearts we are all Swami’s students.
What are we learning here that I found nowhere else?
We have experienced Swami lovingly saving us at the very last minute where ever we are -- showing His command over time and place.
Seeing Swami materialize an object is to bear witness to the truth that "Creation -- the universe is a projection of God's will -- it has no basic reality." Swami has written so in Bhagavatha Vahini.
Can modern science even begin to imagine this reality?
Our knowledge about Swami’s love and mastery of time, space, and matter, is not a thought or book knowledge – it is a knowing born out of actual living experience with Swami – it is practical knowledge. No earthly treasure can buy it. Yet it is freely given to you by Swami. It is His precious priceless grace!
Yes! God exists! His heart is soft like butter -- He loves us, and wants our love -- love merges into love -- I am God.
Mind is the key -- it is the cause of our bondage or liberation -- follow the conscience, it leads us to serving society – through service we find God in society and are fulfilled!
Students, you are the holy repository of Swami's teachings -- soon to test this sacred knowledge in the crucible of daily life. How are we to live these teachings? Here is a story.
In February 2005, Swami materialized a gold ring for my wife. It had a rectangular surface and from one side we saw the inscription Om.
We noticed that from different sides the same lines looked like words in different languages. One looked Arabic. Swami said that they were names of God.
I knew the mystery of the different names would unfold in time.
A close friend became ill -- his wife was disabled. They couldn't care for themselves. They sank into despair.
We traveled 2000 miles -- to work hard for a week cleaning their home and moving them to a safe place. Their home was in such disarray and so dirty that we had to wear protective masks when working there. This is man's condition today -- we live in polluted land, water, air, and societal relationships -- we have become sick!
Swami was in our thoughts, words, and deeds, -- and as we established cleanliness and purity in the setting, and in our impulses, we saw signs of Swami's divinity -- in the smiles on our dear friends’ faces.
While at the desk of our motel, the clerk noticed Sharon's ring -- "Do you know what that means?" she asked. "It is the name of God, Allah," she said. -- -- Service brought insight!
Subsequently we learned the meaning of each word as we turned the ring in different angles. From one angle it was Om, from another Allah, from another I am I, from another El, a name of God in the Jewish religion. Swami was teaching -- different names but one God, and that by serving we see our unity in diversity.
Deeper grew the wisdom in the course of service.
Sharon and I went to St. Petersburg to speak at the Russian National Sai Conference about a year and a half ago. Swami teaches self-management -- family management -- local community service -- even service in the world community.
We told the ring story and showed pictures on a large screen. Muslims in the audience were deeply moved and cheered. They were happy to see that Swami had recognized them by materializing their holiest word. We were so happy to play a part in bringing happiness.
Professor Jafar Malaev from Dagestan had the widest smile of all at the conference. I'd never heard of Dagestan. How could I have met Professor Jafar but in the expanding orbit of Swami's love?
He was a Muslim and Chancellor of a large university with an enrollment of 30,000 students. He was impressed by Swami's love and educational programs. "How can I bring your teaching to my university?" He asked. Swami simply said, "You are the educator -- find out for yourself." -- There’s a major lesson for us here! We must integrate the teachings through the power of practice -- it is up to us. Constant integrated awareness -- hands in society – and head in the forest -- integrate the two into one!
Jafar said --"We must rise above anger, violence, and revenge, if we are to survive. Problems such as in the Middle East between Palestinians and Israelis must be solved with love." Then taking my hand in his -- and looking deeply into my eyes, he said -- "We must stop fighting and learn to love each other -- Sandweiss I love you." I was sincerely touched and responded, "and Jafar, I love you." Swami’s ring brought us together!
Jafar is Muslim and I am Jewish. I pray that this love generated by Sai, -- enters into the age-old conflict between Palestinians and Israelis -- Muslim and Jew -- into all frictions and factions -- heals our hearts and brings peace. Is it possible?
Only through Swami's love -- and we are His messengers. We gain confidence in the possibility of pure love bringing world peace – by looking at how this love has already manifested!
When I first met Swami 37 years ago I couldn't stop thinking and writing about Him. I was so thrilled to see infinite consciousness and love in a being -- and to know that He is a reflection of the Self. I learned that I am God.
But when I told my fellow psychiatrists at the University that I am God, they thought that I had lost my mind in India. Actually, I found my heart here! Matters didn't improve when I said, "Wait, wait -- you are God too." Modern psychiatry still has a ways to go.
Then came the temples of healing -- the Super Specialty Hospitals with their message of purity and compassion. -- How quickly they appeared, how beautiful they are, how efficiently and effectively they express Swami's love for the poor and needy. How they encourage us to be instruments of this love as well.
In an age when medicine has been polluted by desire for money and position -- the message of Swami's hospitals -- of purity, sanctity, and service, is already being heard and practiced. For instance, one month ago I took part in the first Sai International Medical Conference at a large convention center in California USA. It was organized by the Sri Sathya Sai International Medical Committee -- Chairman Dr. Narendra Reddy. Swami told Dr. Reddy that He would conduct the meeting -- and indeed, it was brilliant.
About 30 gifted speakers -- some chairmen of departments -- presidents of societies, from the USA and around the world -- spoke to an international group of about 450 doctors, about Swami's love -- and how they integrated it in their practices, free clinics and camps, and disaster relief programs. Some of our brothers and sisters had been to such distressed areas as Darfur, Somalia, Kosovo, poor villages in Russia, Africa, and India, serving the most suffering of our brothers and sisters -- and with Swami's support ever present.
Swami is bringing a transformation not only in medicine but also in all relationships and especially in education. I have seen this University blossom. I saw the beginning when there were only lines in the sand pointing where to dig. I've seen the buildings rise – I’ve seen you in the corridors and the classrooms, -- the laboratories and hostels, -- on the sports fields and during darshan when you scurry so quickly for a seat near Swami. -- I've been friends with the Vice Chancellors from the beginning. The first one, Dr. V. Gokak, sat at our kitchen table in the United States teaching our four young daughters the food prayer.
And now I stand before you at the time of this 28th Convocation -- having seen such a transformation of buildings, programs, and students. And now this university is ranked among the best in all of India!
How exhilarating to see your bright faces and sense the eagerness in your hearts to serve. You are proof that the integration of secular and spiritual education is not only possible -- not only practical -- it is essential if we are to survive!
Dear students, be ever vigilant to hold tight to Swami as we face today’s enormous problems.
Poverty of love and the rise of selfishness are producing great suffering in our minds and on Mother Earth. Anxiety, depression, hatred, confusion, loss of reason and purpose, run rampant. Mindless production and consumption have produced depletion and pollution.
Over one billion people already suffer from a shortage of clean water -- we cough up 93 million tons of toxic waste daily into the atmosphere. -- This mindless, selfish action affects us all -- the Inuit Eskimos of Greenland, for instance, are among those having the highest concentrations of these toxins in their body. They are at our mercy.
We currently use 20% more resources than the Earth can regenerate. With the growing world economies and if everyone would consume to the degree found in the United States, it would take five planets the size of Earth to replenish our addictions. Adding four more planets cannot be our goal!
We face the threat of nuclear war, genocides, racism, fundamentalism, narrowness, terrorism. How can this dire condition change?
Only through Swami's love -- and we are His messengers.
Our place is with Swami -- to be worthy instruments of His love. The issue is not that we don't know the teachings. Swami has firmly placed them in our hearts! The problem is one of losing will and determination over the long haul -- of getting and forgetting our close relationship with Swami. Swami describes this closeness in a letter to His students years ago.
“The bird with you – the wings with Me
The foot with you -- the way with Me,
The eye with you -- the form with Me,
The thing with you -- the dream with Me,
The world with you -- the heaven with Me,
So are we free, so are we found,
So we begin, and so we end,
You in me, and I in you.
Be happy!"
We must not get and forget the gifts that Swami has given -- because of bruised egos, daunting tasks, or prolonged effort. There are no excuses to wander -- I am too tired -- it is too inconvenient -- my career consumes all my time -- I have to make money -- I'm not in the mood -- I'm embarrassed -- I forgot -- so many reasons to drift.
No, no – the path of pure love is too important. Rather we must recognize our role and rise to the calling -- as Swami once wrote to students,
“Students …
See life as a battlefield meant for heroism and courage.
You are the children of God, heroes in action, great soldiers in the age of Kali. -- The mother is awaiting your arrival on the scene."
Hold tight and be ready to serve. Here is a story about sacrificial love ever ready to serve Swami.
Dr. Jack Hislop came to know of Swami and served Him faithfully for the last 30 years of his life. He was the first President of the Sathya Sai Council of the United States and wrote two books about Swami, "Conversations with Sathya Sai Baba," and "My Baba and I." Swami told me that for his last 15 years, Hislop was in constant meditation on Swami.
Hislop was a strong man and spoke all over the world about Swami. When he was approaching death and becoming frail, he was invited to speak in Japan. Because he was so weak, he wrote to Swami asking if he should go.
Swami sent one word back – “Go!" It appeared that Swami was asking for total surrender -- to fully release everything into Him and accept that He is the doer!
Although Hislop could hardly stand, he obeyed our Master -- and remarkably spoke 35 times in 10 days. Sometimes Swami holds a devotee up as a role model of sacrificial service. I believe that Dr. Hislop was such a devotee.
Hislop returned home feeble and faint. One morning I called -- he said that he had fallen in the night and was too weak to rise -- so he lay for hours on the floor. I was alarmed and immediately took him to the hospital. We found out that he had cancer and would soon die.
Dr. Hislop had no fear of death -- Swami was his staff and support. When asked what he had learned from his long spiritual life and what was giving him strength now, without hesitation he said, "I have practiced many paths -- meditation, service, detachment, -- but of all paths, the most lasting and what I'm holding onto now is devotion! All other paths -- meditation, service -- have dropped away. What remains is devotion. I see Swami -- and I know that He is in me -- and I am in Him."
Pure love is most precious. It is the alpha and omega -- the beginning and the end. When everything impermanent is removed, love remains. When the well runs dry and all the frogs leave, there remains only God's pure love to keep us company. Swami tells us that Creation, Preservation, and Dissolution, emanate from this pure love. Pure love brings beauty to the character -- harmony to the home -- and peace to the world.
And Swami has come to give us this pure love – as He has said—
“I have come to light the lamp of love in your hearts,
to see that it shines day by day with added luster.”
Swami has showered his pure love on me in overflowing abundance today. He has allowed me the honor of being Chief Guest and the opportunity to speak to you today. The invitation came as a complete shock. I know that many are better qualified – but Swami allowed me the honor – it is an expression of His pure love—a love that operates beyond the realm of human comprehension -- plain and simple as that. I am grateful beyond measure for Your pure love, Swami. Thank You.
We might ask if Swami’s love can actually bring peace to our troubled world. It is one thing to see the miraculous appearance of Super Specialty Hospitals, mammoth clean- water projects, revolutionary educational programs, spiritual centers all over the world practicing service and love – it is something else altogether to really consider that Swami can actually bring world peace. Although Swami has said that in a short time we will have world peace – it seems almost impossible.
But let us be open to the possibility of this impossibility – because Swami can do anything! We must seriously prepare for the moment when Swami picks any of us out of the crowd, as He picked me today, and places us in a position to actually influence world events. By singing His name, serving His children, studying His eternal wisdom – we must prepare ourselves for the day He picks us.
My wife once asked Swami if He would save the world. He said, “Half save, half seva.” Seva – pure love in action!
Swami, as we approach the year leading to Your 85th birthday, I pray a year of pure Love, -- let Your glory shine on our hearts like a million suns – setting our love aflame –
Until You and I become the same—
Let us walk with Your love in our hearts
Your name on our lips
Your hand in ours
And hand in hand – half save, half seva
Let us bring honor to this holy University and to Your sacred name – and radiate love to the world – so that
The mountains ring with love
The heavens sing with love
The stars shine with love
The poets rhyme with love And all the beings
Of all the worlds are happy
Students, I know the love in your hearts, I share it -- I've heard you chirping frequently in front of Swami – Swami, Swami, Swami – Swami, Swami, Swami -- I've seen Him moved by your yearning. I pray He hears this plaintive cry from fledgling birds about to fly--and blesses us with His precious words of light.

Introductory Address
PROF. VISHWANATH PANDIT
Vice-Chancellor
With loving Salutations at the Lotus Feet of our Beloved Lord, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, I invoke His blessings for this august function.
Revered Chancellor, Professor Samuel Sandweiss who has kindly agreed to deliver the Convocation Address, Distinguished members of the Governing Body, the University Trust and the Academic Council, Respected Guests, members of the faculty, Graduands of the Year, and Dear Students, it is my privilege to welcome you all to the Twenty Eighth Annual Convocation of the Sri Sathya Sai University.
REAL EDUCATION
Human existence has apparently distinct but in reality integrated two aspects – the manifest and the unmanifest or, more simply the outer and the inner self. The need to promote both has been felt ever since humanity emerged from its primitive existence. It is natural that the initial concern was with the gross body and its relationship to the manifest world. While improvement of capabilities needed for living steadily improved, the urge to listen to the unmanifested self
deepened. Though Man lives in the body-mind-intellect complex, he cannot ignore the higher Atmic Complex. The Vyavaharik and the Atmic life need to be integrated effectively. This is where education comes in with its twin segments
which need to complement and indeed reinforce each other.
Great thinkers in the past had a clear understanding that education was indeed the very process which lays the foundation for Dharma (Righteousness) by removing the cover of ignorance and letting the Self inner shine. It was put
remarkably by Greeks with the proclamation:
“………. Education should devise the simplest and most effective methods to turn the mind towards the light. Not to implant sight in it because it already has the capacity, but to correct its orientation, because it is now improperly aligned and is not facing the right way.”
Therein lay the seed for Educare.
Similarly, the societal welfare implications of education are marvelously brought out by a Chinese proverb which says
If you are thinking for a few months grow fruits and vegetables, If you are thinking about a few years grow trees.
But if you are concerned about generations to come educate your children.
More than a century back the reputed philosopher John Stuart Mill emphasized the power of education and therefore the need to design and harness it for human good as he said,“Education and opinion which have so vast a power over human character should so use that power as to establish in the mind of every individual an indissoluble association between his own happiness and the good of the whole” ……….. “Selfishness is the principal cause which makes life unsatisfactory ….. There is no inherent necessity that any human being should be a selfish egotist, devoid of every feeling or care but those which centre in his own miserable individuality…….”
The earliest three universities in Europe established several hundred years back at Oxford in England, Salamanca in Spain and Sorborn in France had deep religious and presumably spiritual foundations. This was true of India much earlier when universities at Nalanda, Taxila and other places were established and even more so and much earlier when the system of education took the form of Gurukulas under the guidance of great saints and sages.
Unfortunately, however, as man progressed materially with advancement in science and technology, his concern for inner peace and happiness got steadily blurred. Education for life took a back seat and that for a living became increasingly prominent, eventually overshadowing it. Education got entirely focused on mind body and intellect with egocentric tendencies leading to Swartham and Swaprayojanam as the sole motivation for all human endeavours.
Dharma got diluted into Morality which in turn came down to ethics and has fallen further to a syndrome of market mechanism driven entirely by profit. Education itself has today emerged as one of the best businesses under the regime of a globalised world. No wonder the world is up against massive problems of environmental degradation, poor access to healthcare and absence of true education.
THE DIVINE MISSION
Time had obviously come for the LORD to redeem His promise to reincarnate and take the world back to Sanathana Dharma, as He said:
Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharatha
Abhyuddhanamadharmasya tadatmanam srujamyaham
He did exactly as He had promised, and came down once again as Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to transform humanity. The Divine Sankalpa was clear.
Education was the top priority and the objective was obvious. The start had to be made with education for girls because educating one girl meant educating one and more correctly two families. Inaugurating the Sri Sathya Sai College of Arts
and Sciences for Women at Anantapur in 1968 Bhagavan declared –“India is being forged into Bhogabhoomi (land of luxury), a land of skyscrapers, tinned food, air-conditioning, and television. Indians are being shaped into an imitative, insurgent, and ill-disciplined mass. They are being transplanted on other soils and encouraged to grow without roots. This is an insult to the past, and a sacrilege on the history of Time.
That is the reason I have decided that this College be inaugurated on Gurupoornima Day, as a reminder of the highest tradition, in which the highest ideals of life were instilled by personal example and guidance by the Guru, to pupils eager to imbibe.”
True Education is not merely for India but for the entire world and this country is meant to lead in spiritual regeneration. Bhagavan highlighted the need for character building so as to produce enlightened citizens for tomorrow with a deep
commitment to social welfare.
The sapling that was planted at Anantapur and later at Brindavan and Prasanthi Nilayam itself has now grown into a University which has been acclaimed to be a path breaker by a Delegation of Indian Parliament in 1997, two Peer Teams of the University Grants Commission in 1999 and 2008 and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council which gave it the highest level rating of A++ in 2003. The uniqueness of the University goes deeper in so far as
the emphasis on human values is in no way at the cost of academic excellence.
That the two streams complement and reinforce each other is fully evidenced by the type of students it has produced.
Saturated with five human values of Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Non-violence, alumni of the Sri Sathya Sai University spread across India and indeed across the world have been acknowledged not only as competent professionals but also as role models for their moral behaviour and service to society. The ancient system of Gurukula education has been effectively reinvented to suit the modern times. No doubt this must verily be the only university of its kind in the entire world. The daily interaction that students have with the Revered Chancellor of this University is unthinkable anywhere else. The purpose is to mould the students’ mind and intellect filling the heart with Love for all. I cannot do better than quote Swami Himself as follows:
“Education means broadening the heart. It implies development of Control over senses. It should make one seek to promote the good of the world. It should serve to instill all good qualities in the student. An education that is devoid of such qualities is worthless.”
SAI SYSTEM OF EDUCATION
The educational system followed here has a clear interface with the society in all its endeavours. This is abundantly brought out by the kind of academic research that is pursued here as well as the co-curricular activities undertaken. The well known example of the latter is the Grama Seva which is undertaken every year with all students and all teachers participating in it. This year’s programme was stretched over ten days during which students and teachers visited more than 150 villages spread over three Mandals of Kothacheruvu, Bukkapatnam and Puttaparthi carrying the message of love from Bhagavan. Lakhs of packets of food and sweets were distributed along with several thousands of sarees and dhotis. How much joy it gives to the villagers can only be seen to be believed. More than that, for teachers, and students it is a matter of happiness and a process of learning.
Similarly, the bounden duty of undertaking academic research relevant to social welfare is prominently reflected in the topics chosen for large research projects as well as those for doctoral and M.Phil dissertations. These relate to devising solutions for problems of drinking water, identifying useful fauna and flora in this area, and how these may be used, and several ways in which health care can be improved. This is well illustrated by the work undertaken by scholars who will be awarded Ph.D. and M.Phil degrees by Bhagavan today. By His grace several teachers of the University were chosen for prestigious awards by reputed organizations and agencies during this year. The University has arrived at a new threshold when its role as an instrument of Bhagavan’s Mission has assumed greater importance. We pray for His guidance at every step.
When Swami added the MBA programme to the University when it was barely five years old, one wondered why a University devoted to promotion of thyaga should train students for plum jobs in the business world. The Revered
Chancellor knew that every aspect and every sphere of life was getting increasingly corporatised. Hence the need to prepare an army of students with values based training who must enter the portals of business houses and transform them as institutions for social good. This is indeed happening slowly but steadily. Obviously, He knew the potential ailments and the effective medicines. Spiritual elements are fully integrated in the teaching programmes of
all disciplines in the University, as ordained by Him.
How the University can shoulder its responsibility as a watchdog on what is happening around was remarkably highlighted by a high profile Conference on“Ethics and the World of Finance” organized by the University at the end of August. This brought together about thirty top echelons representing regulatory institutions, insurance companies, bankers and investing agencies; a dozen reputed academics well versed in finance, management and economics and
versatile bureaucrats dealing with governance. Their deliberations for two days focused on the current international economic crisis which has led to bank failures, widespread bankruptcy and massive unemployment. More than all this,
millions have lost access to health care, prospects of education and caused massive impoverishment of the ordinary people. A large number of poor households have been robbed of their precious savings.
It is clear that if we want to identify the basic cure for all this we have to go back to what Swami prescribed for such ailments more than three decades back, in 1976, to be precise when He asked us to exercise a “Ceiling on Desires”. In the present context, in particular, the additional part of the Divine direction was‘Do not waste money.’ In today’s context the problem arose not only from excessive greed of not merely an individual but of institutions who were playing
with others’ money. The idea of behaving like a Trustee was thrown to the winds because of a built-in asymmetry. Profits will be mine but losses will be yours.
The roots of the problem and the solution to the present travails of humanity were succinctly explained by Swami in His valedictory discourse with reference to episodes from Mahabharata. How Dharmaraja falling prey to his weakness for gambling brought misery to his family – an excellent illustration of how people dominated by wrong tendencies ignore risk and throw away precautions. Also Draupadi brought in the question of the well being of other stakeholders – her other four husbands. There is no way to highlight what was said except by quoting Swami Himself as He said:
“Money comes and goes but morality comes and grows. Cultivate Love of God which will lead to fear of sin and bring morality in society”
The Conference came to be a turning point for many participants who realized their real role in promoting human welfare as Trustees for the society..
OUR CHIEF GUEST
Today there is a wide consensus in the medical profession that most ailments are born in the mind and passed on to the body in different ways. Hence the need to mend the Mind as Bhagavan has taught. We cannot think of a better person than Dr. Samuel Sandweiss who has mastered this subject in all its facets and shown how spiritual practices affect the mind and expand consciousness and love. He not only teaches psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego but has also been a practicing psychiatrist for over 40 years. Rising well above the body-mind-intellect complex he treats human beings as embodiments of divinity. Most of us have learnt a great deal from his inspiring books, namely, Sai Baba: The Holyman and the Psychiatrist, Spirit and the Mind, and the more recent one, With Love Man is God. An ardent devotee of Bhagavan for more than three decades, Dr. Sandweiss has served on the Sathya Sai Baba Council of the United States since its beginning in 1975. He and his wife Sharon have hosted a Sai Baba Center in their home for over 35 years. They also oversee Birth Day Publishing Company which publishes books about Sri Sathya Sai Baba by Western devotees. I welcome Dr. Sandweiss to this august function and request him to deliver the Convocation Address. All of us need to listen carefully and carry a valuable message with us when we leave. I am sure the message will inspire the outgoing Graduates for many many years to come.
Finally, I pray to Bhagavan to grant us all the strength and the yearning to be worthy instruments for His Divine Mission.

Venerado Canciller, Profesor Samuel Sandweiss quien accediera gentilmente a pronunciar el Discurso de Convocación, Distinguidos miembros del Cuerpo Administrativo, del Trust de la Universidad y del Consejo Académico, Respetados Invitados, miembros de la facultad, Candidatos a la Graduación del Año y Queridos Estudiantes, es un privilegio el darles la bienvenida a todos a la vigésimocatava Convocación Anual de la Universidad Sri Sathya Sai.
Educación Real
La existencia humana tiene dos aspectos aparentemente distintos, aunque en realidad integrados – lo manifiesto y lo inmanifiesto o, más simplemente, lo externo y el sí mismo interno. La necesidad por fomentarlos ambos ha sido sentida desde que la humanidad emergiera de su existencia primitiva. Es natural que la preocupación inicial se dirigiera hacia el cuerpo denso y su relación con el mundo manifiesto. En tanto que el desarrollo de las capacidades necesarias para vivir progresaba contínuamente, se iba profundizando el apremio por escuchar al sí mismo inmanifiesto. Aunque el Hombre vive en el complejo cuerpo-mente-intelecto, no puede ignorar al Comprejo Atmico superior. El Vyavaharik y la vida Atmica requieren ser efectivamente integrados. Es aquí en donde viene la educación con sus dobles segmentos, los que necesitan complementarse y en verdad reforzarse mutuamente.
Grandes pensadores en el pasado entendieron claramente que la educación era en verdad el proceso mismo que establece la base para el Dharma (rectitud) gracias a eliminar la cubierta de ignorancia y permitir que brille el Sí Mismo interno. Esto fue notablemente expresado por los griegos, al proclamar : ". . . la Educación debiera diseñar los métodos más simples y efectivos para volver la mente hacia la luz. No el implantarle la visión, porque ya cuenta con esta capacidad, sino el corregir su orientación, porque está incorrectamente alineada y no está mirando hacia donde debe."
Aquí yacía la simiente para Educare.
De manera similar, las implicaciones de la educación para el bienestar de la sociedad son expuestas maravillosamente por un proverbio chino que dice, "Si estás pensando para unos pocos meses, cultiva frutas y vegetales. Si está pensando para algunos años, cultiva árboles. Más si te preocupan las generaciones por venir, educa a tus hijos."
Hace ya más de un siglo, el famoso filósofo John Stuart Mill enfatizó el poder de la educación y, por ello, la necesidad de diseñarla y utilizarla para bien del ser humano, como dijera, "La educación y la opinión que tienen un tan vasto poder sobre el carácter humano, debieran usar ese poder para establecer en la mente de cada individuo una indisoluble asociación entre su propia felicidad y el bien del todo" . . . "El egoísmo es la causa principal para que la vida sea insatisfactoria . . . No existe una necesidad inherente como para que algún ser humano deba ser un egotista egoísta, carente de cualquier sentimiento o preocupación salvo los que se centren en su propia miserable individualidad . . . "
Las más tempranas universidades en Europa, establecidas hace varios siglos atrás en Oxford Inglaterra, Salamanca en España y Sorbonne en Francia, tenían profundos fundamentos religiosos y, presumiblemente, espirituales. Esto también valía para la India desde mucho antes, cuando se establecieran las universidades de Nalanda, Taxila y otros lugares, y mucho más aún e incluso mucho antes, cuando el sistema de educación tomó la forma de los Gurukulas bajo la guía de grandes santos y sabios.
Lamentablemente sin embargo, a medida que el hombre progresaba materialmente con el avance en la ciencia y la tecnología, su preocupación por la paz interior y la felicidad se fue haciendo cada vez más borrosa. La educación para la vida se postergó al asiento de atrás y aquella para los medios de vida se volvió cada vez más prominente, llegando por último a opacarla. La educación se enfocó por entero en la mente, cuerpo e intelecto con tendencias egocéntricas que llevaron al Swartham y Swaprayojanam como única motivación para todos los esfuerzos humanos.
El Dharma se diluyó en la Moralidad, la cual a su vez descendió a la ética y ha caído aún más hacia un síndrome de mecanismo mercadista movido enteramente por las ganancias o el lucro. La Educación misma ha emergido hoy en
día como uno de los mejores negocios, bajo el régimen de un mundo globalizado. No es de extrañar que el mundo se enfrente a masivos problemas de degradación ambiental, a un pobre acceso al cuidado de la salud y a la ausencia de una verdadera educación.
La Misión Divina
Obviamente había llegado el momento para que el SEÑOR cumpliera Su promesa de reencarnar y llevar al mundo de vuelta a Sanathana Dharma, como dijera :
Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharatha, Abhyuddhanamadharmasya tadatmanam srujamyaham.
Hizo exactamente lo prometido y descendió una vez más como Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba para transformar a la humanidad. Fue claro el Divino Sankalpa.
La educación era la máxima prioridad y el objetivo obvio. El comienzo había de ser dirigido a la educación para niñas, porque el educar a una niña significa educar a una o, más correctamente, a dos familias. Al inaugurar la Facultad Sri Sathya Sai de Artes y Ciencias para Mujeres en Anantapur, en 1968, Bhagavan declaró – " La India está siendo convertida en un Bhogabhoomi (tierra de lujos), una tierra de rascacielos, alimentos enlatados, aire acondicionado y televisión. Los indios están siendo convertidos en una masa imitadora, insurgente e indisciplinada. Están siendo trasplantados a otros suelos y impulsados a crecer sin raíces. Esto es un insulto al pasado, y un sacrilegio en la historia del Tiempo.
Esa es la razón por la que he decidido que esta Facultad sea inaugurada el Día de Gurupoornima, como recordatorio de la más alta tradición, en la que los ideales superiores de la vida les eran instilados a los pupilos ansiosos por absorberlos, a través del ejemplo personal y la guía del Guru."
La educación real no es meramente para la India, sino para el mundo entero, y este país está destinado a liderar en cuanto a regeneración espiritual. Bhagavan subrayó la necesidad de formar el carácter para producir a los ciudadanos esclarecidos del mañana, con un profundo compromiso con el bienestar social.
El brote que fuera plantado en Anantapur y más tarde en Brindavan y Prasanthi Nilayam mismo, ha crecido ahora hasta ser una Universidad que fuera declarada como pionera por una delegación del Parlamento indio en 1997, dos Equipos de Pares de la Comisión de Becas Universitarias en 1999 y 2008 y el Concejo Nacional de Verificación y Acreditación, que le asignaron el más alto nivel de clasificación el A++ el 2003. La calidad de única en su género de la Universidad es más profunda en cuanto a que el énfasis que pone en los valores humanos, en modo alguno se entrega a expensas de la excelencia académica.
El que las dos corrientes se complementan y potencian mutuamente queda demostrado en plenitud por el tipo de estudiantes que han producido. Saturados con los cinco valores humanos de Verdad, Rectitud, Paz, Amor y No Violencia, los alumnos de la Universidad Sri Sathya Sai diseminados por toda la India y, en verdad, por todo el mundo, han sido reconocidos no sólo como profesionales competentes, sino como modelos, tanto por su comportamiento moral como por su servicio a la sociedad. El antiguo sistema de la educación en el Gurukul ha sido reinventado eficazmente para adecuarlo a los tiempos modernos. Es indudable que esta debe ser en verdad la única Universidad de su tipo en el mundo. La interacción diaria que mantienen los estudiantes con el Reverenciado Canciller de esta Universidad es algo impensable en cualquier otro lugar. El propósito es el de moldear la mente y el intelecto de los estudiantes y el de llenar su corazón con Amor por todos. No puedo hacer nada mejor que citar a Swami Mismo :
"La Educación significa ensanchar el corazón. Implica el desarrollo del control sobre los sentidos. Debería llevarle a uno a buscar de promover el bien en el mundo. Debiera servir para infundirle al estudiante todas las buenas cualidades. Una educación desprovista de tales cualidades será inútil."
El Sistema de Educación Sai
El sistema educacional seguido aquí muestra una clara interface con la sociedad en todos sus esfuerzos. Esto es nítidamente destacado por el tipo de investigación académica que se sigue acá como asimismo por las actividades para-curriculares que se emprenden. El bien conocido ejemplo de esto último es el Grama Seva que se lleva a cabo todos los años y en el cual participan todos los estudiantes y todos los profesores. El programa de este año se extendió por diez días, durante los cuales estudiantes y profesores visitaron más de 150 aldeas diseminadas por los tres Mandals de Kothacheruvu, Bukkapatnam y Puttaparthi, llevando el mensaje de amor de Bhagavan. Fueron distribuidos cientos de miles de paquetes con alimentos y golosinas además de varios miles de saris y dhotis. La alegría que esto le da a los aldeanos es algo que debe ser visto para creerlo. Más que ésto, tanto para profesores como para estudiantes, este servicio representa un asunto que no sólo les hace felices, sino que es un proceso de aprendizaje.
De manera similar, el obligado deber de emprender investigaciones académicas relevantes para el bienestar social
se ve prominentemente reflejado en los temas elegidos tanto para grandes proyectos de investigación como también para disertaciones doctorales y de Maestría Phil. Ellos se relacionan con planear soluciones para problemas de agua potable, con la identificación de la flora y fauna de la zona y la manera en que se puede utilizar, y varias formas en que puede mejorarse el cuidado de la salud. Esto queda muy bien ilustrado por el trabajo emprendido por alumnos que han de recibir hoy de manos de Bhagavan sus diplomas de Ph.D y de M.Phil. Por Su Gracia, varios profesores de la Universidad han sido elegidos este año para recibir prestigiosos premios, por parte de reputadas organizaciones y agencias. La Universidad ha llegado hasta un nuevo umbral en donde su rol como un instrumento en la Misión de Bhagavan ha asumido una mayor importancia. Rogamos por Su guía en cada paso.
Cuando Swami agregó el programa de Maestría en Administración de Empresas a la Universidad cuando esta apenas cumplía cinco años desde su establecimiento, uno se preguntaba por qué una Universidad dedicada a la promoción de thyaga (renunciación) debiera instruir a estudiantes para puestos de élite en el mundo de los negocios. El Reverenciado Canciller sabía que cada aspecto y cada esfera de la vida se estaba tornando crecientemente corporativizada. Por ende, necesitaba crear un ejército de estudiantes con un entrenamiento basado en valores que habrían de entrar por los portales de los centros de negocios para transformarlos en instituciones para el bien social. Esto, en verdad, está sucediendo lenta pero seguramente. Es obvio que Él sabía de las potenciales dolencias y los medicamentos eficaces. Los elementos espirituales se encuentran plenamente integrados en los programas de enseñanza de todas las disciplinas en la Universidad, como Él lo ha ordenado.
La manera en que la Universidad puede asumir su responsabilidad como perro guardián respecto a lo que está sucediendo alrededor, fue notablemente resaltado por una Conferencia sobre la Ética y el Mundo de las Finanzas, de alto perfil, organizada por la Universidad a fines de agosto. Esto reunió a cerca de treinta máximos jerarcas que representaban a instituciones normalizadoras, compañías de seguros, banqueros y agencias de inversiones; a una docena de reputados académicos muy versados en finanzas, administración y economía, como también a versátiles burócratas enlazados con el gobierno. Durante sus dos días de deliberaciones, se enfocaron en la actual crisis económica internacional que ha llevado a fracasos bancarios, difundidas bancarrotas y un masivo desempleo. Más allá de todo ésto, son millones los que han perdido el acceso a la atención de la salud o a sus prospectos de educación y se ha causado un empobrecimiento generalizado entre la gente común. Un incalculable número de familias pobres han sido despojadas de sus preciados ahorros.
Está claro que si deseamos identificar la cura básica para todo esto hemos de volver atrás hacia lo que Swami prescribiera para tales dolencias hace ya más de tres décadas, en 1976, para ser precisos, cuando nos pidiera ejercitar un "Techo a los Deseos". En el presente contexto en particular, la parte adicional de la directiva Divina fue, "'No malgasten dinero'. En el contexto de hoy el problema surgió no sólo de la excesiva codicia no sólo de un individuo sino de las instituciones que jugaban con el dinero de otros. La idea de actuar como un Fiduciario fue rechazada debido a una asimetría inherente. Las ganancias serán mías, mas las pérdidas serán suyas.
Las raíces del problema y la solución para los actuales afanes de la humanidad fueron explicadas sucintamente por Swami en Su discurso de despedida, haciendo referencia a episodios del Mahabharata. Como Dharmaraja, cayendo víctima de su debilidad por las apuestas le trajo desdicha a su familia – una excelente ilustración acerca de como la gente dominada por tendencias erróneas, ignora el riesgo y deja de lado toda precaución. También Draupadi introduce la cuestión del pozo perteneciente a otros – sus otros cuatro maridos. No hay otro modo de subrayar lo que se dijera, salvo citando a Swami Mismo cuando dijera :
"El dinero llega y se va, mas la moralidad llega y crece. Cultiven el amor a Dios el que conducirá al temor al pecado y le traerá moralidad a la sociedad."
La Conferencia llegó a representar un punto de cambio para muchos participantes quienes se dieron cuenta de su rol real en la promoción del bienestar humano en cuanto Fiduciarios para la sociedad.

Hoy en día existe un amplio consenso en la profesión médica en cuanto a que la mayoría de las dolencias se gestan en la mente y son traspasadas al cuerpo de diferentes maneras. Por ende surge la necesidad de corregir la Mente como lo ha enseñado Bhagavan. No podemos pensar en una persona mejor que el Dr. Samuel Sandweiss, quien ha llegado a conocer a fondo y a dominar este tema en todas sus facetas y que ha demostrado como las prácticas espirituales afectan a la mente y expanden la conciencia y el amor. Él no sólo enseña psiquiatría en la Universidad de California, San Diego, sino que ha sido también un psiquiatra practicante por más de 40 años. Elevándose muy por encima del complejo mente-cuerpo-intelecto, trata a los seres humanos como encarnaciones de la divinidad. La mayoría de nosotros hemos aprendido bastante de sus inspiradores libros, en especial, "Sai Baba : el Santo y el Psiquiatra", "El Espíritu y la Mente" y el más reciente de ellos, "Con Amor el Hombre es Dios". Un ferviente devoto de Bhagavan por más de tres décadas, el Dr. Sandweiss ha servido en el Concejo Sathya Sai Baba de los Estados Unidos desde sus comienzos en 1975. Él y su mujer, Sharon, han cobijado un Centro Sai Baba en su hogar por más de 35 años. Ms. Sharon Sandweiss was blessed to have an opportunity to speak in the Divine Presence on the occasion of Ladies’ Day 2009. In a gesture that is normal for any speaker, Sharon, upon coming to the podium, went up to Bhagawan seeking Divine blessings and in that moment of bliss missed out offering the Rose that was meant for Bhagawan. After reaching the mike, upon realizing her “folly”, she rushed back to Bhagawan with an apologetic smile, presenting the rose and what followed was a stream of unsullied love for the Divine.
With deepest humility and love, I offer pranams at the Lotus Feet of our Beloved Sai Baba.
Respected elders, brothers and sisters, and dear, dear students,
I am honoured and deeply humbled to stand before you today. I offer my heartfelt gratitude to Sai Baba for His loving compassion. Thank You Baba for your motherly love. Thank You for this wonderful, festive, meaningful, sacred, beautiful, joyful, happy day when we celebrate the sanctity of motherhood and the courage ... the beautiful courage ... and the amazing capabilities of women. Women all over the world are happy.
Please speak though me Baba so that we all feel Your love.
Recently, my husband and I tried to express our gratitude to Sai Baba. “Baba, You are always serving others. How can we help You?”
Baba smiled and said, “I don’t need your help. You help your husband. He helps you. You are one. And I help everyone.”
We cried, “Baba we love You soooo much.”.. (cheers) “Baba, we love You so much”.
And He quickly responded, “I love you more.” (cheers)
How can we understand this Divine love? This irresistible love? It has brought us here from nearly every country and every religion in the entire world. We all love our countries, our sacred books, our family customs, and our special spices. Yet we hunger for the same thing. We all want peace. We all want to love and be loved.
Once my husband and I shared an interview with a large group. Baba went around the room asking, “Where are you from?”
“Russia”.
“Where are you from?”
“Russia”.
“Where are you from?”
It seemed as if everybody was from Russia.
Then, Baba came to me and playfully said, “Well, are you from Russia, too?”
I said, “No, Baba.” “Oh yes! But my grand-parents were from Russia.”
Baba said, “See the connection? All are connected. All are one.”
Now, at first glance, Russia and America seemed very distant. Yet this distance shrinks when we compare it to the vastness of space. We are all inhabitants of Mother Earth. We share the same oceans and vast rivers and mountains. We are responsible to each other. When a factory in some small town in the world belches up toxic air, we will suffer everywhere. But when we offer love, when we work for the good of all, in one united voice, then we will hear the universe rejoice.
Thirty-seven years ago, I was like many others. I worried about life. I worried a lot about death. I worried about our children. I worried about our pets. I was smiling on the outside, but inside I was a very sad and fearful soul facing a universe that seemed so meaningless. Fortunately, I married Samuel who was always asking, “What is the meaning of life?”
In 1972, Sam went to India, in search of God. He returned transformed. He exclaimed, “God is on earth in the form of Sai Baba. You’re God. I am God. Everything is God. Now our lives are gonna change forever.”
“What was he talking about? Who is Sai Baba? What is gonna happen to me and our four daughters?” Needless to say I was very scared. You have to remember this was in 1972, in the dark ages before the internet. Today, we just click a button and we are immediately connected with Radio Sai. We can hear Baba’s words. But back then it was very hard to find literature about Sai Baba. So, I observed my husband. He was truly transformed. He was happier. He was calmer. He was more peaceful. He was more patient and most important of all, he was more loving. Of course, he was always loving, but he was more loving.
I was amazed. How can a person change so quickly? I too wanted to have peace. I wanted to have faith. Before I knew it, I was on the plane to India, with my husband. Sai Baba had spared me a life of despair and He had brought sanctity and great joy to our family life. Sai Baba is a living presence in our lives. He knows and loves each one of us. He lives in our heart as love and we know that love is all that is lasting. My husband and I were thrilled to tell our daughters, “You’re not just the body. You’re Divinity. You’re pure love. You be bold and brave like lions. Be courageous (and) unafraid. Follow your conscience. Think sacred thoughts. Do good deeds. Seek good company.
You may stumble and fall but remember problems are your teacher and your loving Sai is by your side. Talk to Him. Speak to Him. He is in your heart as Love. Well, telling our children is not enough. We must be coming as examples and show unity of thought, word and deed. We must practice and refine until we sparkle and shine. Following is a brief example of this truth.
When my husband returned from India, he immediately became a vegetarian. Now this was very unusual in America where most people think (that) a meal is incomplete without meat. I was very offended at first. He was refusing my cooking. But then I suddenly realised that I was eating an animal. I immediately became a vegetarian. Sai Baba was already helping me live a more thoughtful life. But how could we make our children change their eating habits so radically. Sai Baba says He is the source, not the force. So we decided to tell our daughters, “You can have meat outside the home, but not in the home, no longer.” Well, within perhaps a year, our twin daughters who were, maybe 7 at the time, came to us and said, “Mommy, daddy, we love animals too much. We don’t want to eat them.” The younger daughters joined them and said “Yes” too. “We love them, we don’t wanna eat animals.” Can you believe that at the age of seven, they had the sensitivity, the purity in their hearts to know that all life is sacred. This little example staged three points: first, when we become the example, others will follow. Secondly, we all hold this wisdom, this truth within us and it is our duty as parents and teachers to help children manifest this truth. The third point is that secular life is not different from spiritual life. Everything is sacred when it is done with love; even our eating habits.
We worry about the state of the world. We want our children to be safe and happy. Yet, we see greed and disharmony everywhere.
Years ago, we brought our concerns to Baba. “Baba the world is in trouble.”
Baba said, “No, the world is good. The mind of man is the problem”.
“Well Baba, what should we do about schools?”
He said, “The schools are the same. You have to speak with your children. You have to talk with them. You have to understand what they are thinking; you don’t always know what is in their minds.” In other words, He was saying, emphasising the importance of communication, open, respectful communication. First, we listen. Then we try to understand. And then comes the hard part. We have to adjust. We have to compromise. Perhaps, even when it comes to our children.
As Baba was speaking, I had a thought, ‘Where would this world be without Divinity in it?’
Baba interrupted my thoughts and in a very powerful voice He said, “Yes. If it were not for Me, everything would be lost.”
My husband and I shuddered at the authority and the urgency of His words, “Without divinity, everything would be lost.” God Himself has come to save us from ourselves.
Many years ago, I asked Baba, “Can I do more? Can we do more?”
He said, “Yes, I will give you the power, the strength and the blessings to do more”. When we have the impulse to do anything good, He will give us the power, strength and blessings. And then He added, “Home and family.”
Today on Ladies’ Day, we affirm that family life is the foundation of life. When there is harmony, peace and mutual love and respect in the family, God is in our presence and the world is happy. We are all members of one family; One Divine family. When we serve our family with love, we will sanctify our lives. When we uphold justice, we justify our lives. When we support the suffering women in the world, we dignify our lives. When we preserve and protect Mother Earth, we will purify our lives. And we offer all to God, we will glorify our lives.
Today is such a happy day. Today we are dancing in ecstacy, praising God’s glory. Today we pray together, “Baba, keep us close. Don’t ever let us go. Grant us the power, the strength and the blessings to earn Your grace and become Your bliss. We love You Baba.”

volvió presurosa donde Bhagavan con una sonrisa de disculpas, y Le entregó la rosa
y lo que siguió fue una corriente de inmaculado amor por lo Divino.]
Con profunda humildad y amor, ofrezco pranams a los Pies de Loto de nuestro Bienamado Sai Baba.
Respetados mayores, hermanos y hermanas, y muy queridos estudiantes,
Me siento honrada y es con genuina modestia que me paro frente a ustedes hoy. Le ofrezco mi sincera gratitud a Sai Baba por Su amorosa compasión. Gracias Baba por Tu amor maternal. Gracias por este maravilloso, festivo, significativo, sagrado, bello, alegre y feliz día en el que celebramos la santidad de la maternidad y el coraje ... el bello coraje ... y las asombrosas capacidades de las mujeres. Las mujeres en todo el mundo se sienten felices.
Por favor Baba, habla a través mío, para que todos podamos sentir Tu amor.
Recientemente, mi marido y yo intentamos expresarle nuestra gratitud a Sai Baba. "Baba, Tu estás siempre sirviendo a otros. ¿Cómo podemos ayudarte a Tí?" Baba sonrió y dijo, "No necesito su ayuda. Tu le ayudas a tu marido. Él te ayuda a tí. Ustedes son uno. Y Yo le ayudo a todos."
Exclamamos, " Baba, Te amamos taaaanto..." (aplausos) "Baba, Te amamos mucho." Y Él respondió prontamente, "Yo les amo más." (aplausos)
¿Cómo podemos entender este amor Divino? ¡Este irresistible amor? Nos ha traído hasta acá desde casi cada país y cada religión de todo el mundo. Todos amamos a nuestros países, nuestros libros sagrados, nuestras costumbres familiares y nuestros condimentos especiales. No obstante, anhelamos la misma cosa. Todos queremos paz. Todos queremos amar y ser amados.
Una vez, mi marido y yo compartimos una entrevista con un grupo numeroso. Baba caminó por la salita preguntando, "¿De dónde eres?" "De Rusia". "¿De dónde eres?" "De Rusia." "¿De dónde eres?" Parecía como si todos provinieran de Rusia.
Entonces Baba se acercó a mí y dijo bromeando, "Bueno ¿tu eres de Rusia también?" "Dije, "No, Baba. ... ¡Oh, sí! Mis abuelos eran de Rusia." Baba dijo, "¿Ven la conexión? Todos están conectados. Todos son uno."
Ahora, a primera vista, Rusia y los Estados Unidos parecían muy distantes. Sin embargo esta distancia se encoge cuando la comparamos con la vastedad del espacio. Todos somos habitantes de la Madre Tierra. Compartimos los mismos océanos, ríos y montañas. Somos mutuamente responsables. Cuando alguna factoría en algún pueblecito del mundo exhala tóxicos al aire, lo sufriremos por doquier. Mas cuando entregamos amor, cuando trabajamos por el bien de todos, con una sola voz, entonces oiremos como se regocija el universo.
Treinta y siete años atrás, yo era como muchos otros. Me angustiaba por la vida. Me preocupaba mucho por la muerte. Me preocupaba por nuestras hijas. Me preocupaba por nuestras mascotas. Externamente podía sonreir, aunque en mi interior era un alma muy triste y temerosa enfrentando a un universo que parecía tener tan poco sentido. Por fortuna me había casado con Samuel quien estaba siempre preguntando, "¿Cuál es el sentido de la vida?"
En 1972, Sam viajó a la India en busca de Dios. Regresó transformado. Exclamó, "Dios está en la tierra en la forma de Sai Baba. Tu eres Dios. Yo soy Dios. Todo es Dios. Ahora nuestras vidas van a cambiar para siempre."
"¿De qué estaba hablando? ¿Quién es Sai Baba? ¿Qué va a pasar conmigo y nuestras cuatro hijas?" No hay ni que decir que yo estaba muy atemorizada. Deben recordar que esto fue en 1972, en la era del oscurantismo antes del Internet. Hoy, no tenemos sino que presionar un botón y estamos conectados de inmediato con Radio Sai. Podemos escuchar las palabras de Baba. Mas en aquel entonces era difícil hasta encontrar literatura acerca de Sai Baba. De modo que observé a mi marido. Estaba verdaderamente transformado. Se veía más feliz. Estaba más calmado. Era más apacible. Era más paciente y, lo más importante, era más amoroso. Por supuesto que siempre
había sido afectuoso, pero ahora lo era aún más.
Yo estaba sorprendida. ¿Cómo puede una persona cambiar tan rápidamente? Yo también quería tener paz. Quería tener fe. Antes de saberlo, iba en un avión rumbo a la India con mi marido. Sai Baba me había liberado de una vida de desesperanza y había traído santidad y gran alegría a nuestra vida familiar. Sai Baba es una presencia viviente en nuestras vidas. Nos conoce y nos ama a cada uno. Mora en nuestros corazones como amor y nosotros sabemos que el amor es todo lo que perdura. Mi marido y yo nos sentimos emocionados al decirle a nuestras hijas, "Ustedes no son sólo el cuerpo. Son Divinidad. Son puro amor. Han de ser osadas y valientes como leonas. Tengan coraje y no tengan miedo. Sigan a su conciencia. Abriguen pensamientos sagrados. Hagan el bien. Busquen la buena compañía. Puede que tropiecen y se caigan, pero recuerden que los problemas son sus maestros y que su amoroso Sai está a su lado. Háblenle. Él está en sus corazones como Amor."
Y bien, el hablarle a nuestros hijos no es suficiente. Debemos convertirnos en ejemplos y mostrar unidad en pensamiento, palabra y acción. Debemos practicar y refinarnos hasta que centellemos y brillemos. A continuación un breve ejemplo de esta verdad.
Cuando mi marido volvió de la India, se convirtió de inmediato en vegetariano. Y bien, esto era muy inusual en los Estados Unidos en donde la mayoría de las gentes piensa que una comida es incompleta sin carne. Me sentí muy ofendida en un comienzo. Él estaba rechazando mi comida. Mas entonces, me dí cuenta de pronto que estaba comiendo un animal. Y de inmediato me volví vegetariana. Sai Baba ya me estaba ayudando a llevar una vida más reflexiva. Mas, cómo podríamos hacer que nuestras hijas cambiaran tan radicalmente sus hábitos alimentarios. Sai Baba dice que Él es la fuente, no la fuerza. De modo que decidimos decirles a nuestras hijas : "Pueden consumir carne fuera de casa, pero en casa nunca más." Y bien, tal vez dentro del año, nuestras mellizas que tendrían unos 7 años de edad para entonces, vinieron y nos dijeron : "Mami, papi, amamos demasiado a los animales. No queremos comerlos." Las hermanas menores se unieron a ellas, diciendo, "Sí, los amamos, no queremos comer animales." ¿Pueden creer que a la edad de siete años, tenían ya la sensibilidad, la pureza en sus corazones, como para saber que toda vida es sagrada? Este pequeño ejemplo nos escenificó tres puntos : primero, cuando nos convertimos en ejemplos, otros nos seguirán. Segundo, todos llevamos esta sabiduría, esta verdad dentro de nosotros y es nuestro deber como padres y maestros el ayudar a que los niños manifiesten esta verdad. El tercer punto es que la vida secular no es diferente de la vida espiritual. Todo es sagrado cuando se hace con amor; incluso nuestros hábitos alimentarios.
Nos preocupamos acerca del estado del mundo. Queremos que nuestros hijos estén a salvo y sean felices. Sin embargo, vemos codicia y falta de armonía en todas partes.
Años atrás, le llevamos nuestras preocupaciones a Baba. "Baba, el mundo está en problemas". Baba nos dijo, "No, el mundo es bueno. La mente del hombre es el problema."
"Y bien, Baba, ¿qué debiéramos hacer con las escuelas?"
Dijo, "Las escuelas son las mismas. Deben hablar con sus hijos. Tienen que conversar con ellos. Deben entender lo que están pensando; ustedes no siempre saben lo que pasa en sus mentes."
En otras palabras, Él estaba diciendo, enfatizando la importancia de la comunicación, una comunicación abierta, respetuosa. Primero escuchamos. Luego intentamos entender. Y entonces viene la parte difícil : hemos de ajustarnos, hemos de comprometernos. Tal vez incluso cuando se trate de nuestros hijos.
Mientras Baba hablaba, se me ocurrió pensar, "¿Es dónde estaría este mundo sin la Divinidad en él?"
Baba interrumpió mis pensamientos y con una voz poderosa, dijo, "Sí. Si no fuera por Mí, todo estaría perdido.-"
Mi marido y yo nos estremecimos ante la autoridad y lo perentorio de Sus palabras. "Sin divinidad todo estaría perdido". Dios Mismo ha venido a salvarnos de nosotros mismos.
Hace años atrás, Le pregunté a Baba, "¿Puedo hacer más?" ¿Podemos hacer más?"
Dijo, " Sí, Yo les daré el poder, la fuerza y las bendiciones para hacer más". Cuando sentimos el impulso por hacer algo bueno, Él nos dará el poder, la fuerza y las bendiciones. Y luego Baba agregó, "Hogar y familia".
Hoy, en el Día de la Mujer, afirmamos que la vida familiar constituye el fundamento de la vida. En donde haya armonía, paz y amor y respeto mutuos en la familia, Dios está en nuestra presencia y el mundo será feliz.
Todos somos miembros de una familia; Una familia Divina. Cuando servimos a nuestra familia con amor, santificamos nuestras vidas. Cuando defendemos la justicia, justificamos nuestras vidas. Cuando apoyamos a las mujeres que sufren en el mundo, dignificamos nuestras vidas. Cuando preservamos y protegemos a la Madre Tierra, purificamos nuestras vidas. Y si le ofrendáramos todo a Dios, glorificaremos nuestras vidas.
Hoy es un día tan feliz. Hoy danzamos en éxtasis alabando la gloria de Dios. Hoy oramos juntos, "Baba manténnos cercanos. Nunca nos dejes ir. Concédenos el poder, la fuerza y las bendiciones para merecer Tu gracia y convertirnos en Tu dicha. Baba, Te amamos."
