One very important thing that stands out in my memory of all the things that happened in the last few months is a very beautiful relationship that Indulal Shah Ji and Swami shared. I have been watching him quite closely since 2011 when we met Indulal Ji for the first time when Swami decided to go to Mumbai and talk to him. He was very happy, not just because Swami was there. When Indulal Ji shifted to Muddenahalli almost three years ago, Swami told him he will live for 100 years! And the biggest miracle of love that happened was in April 2019. He suddenly took to illness and from that day onwards, he stopped eating. It was very difficult to feed him. It happens. Old people lose interest in eating; lose interest with the regular life but they are happy and contended within themselves. The children got concerned. They prayed to Swami that he was not eating. Swami beautifully said he has gone into a Yogic state. Swami sent 'Ensure' bottles for him out of love that he should at least sip that because he used to like it. And what flavor? His daughter and son-in-law tried their best but it was not happening. When Swami was leaving for Fiji and Australia trip they were concerned if Swami will ever see Indulal Ji again. This should not happen whenever you are touring the world. Whenever it happens, You should be by his side.' Swami said, "I assure you. I assure you!" Every day was a guess. If he had woken up next morning, we were relieved. Swami went to Fiji and Australia, did what He wanted to do and returned.
In April 2019, Swami had told Indulal Ji's daughter that on May 6 He was going to Mumbai. And the last work that He had kept for Indulal Ji was to inaugurate the operation theatre at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Center for Child Heart Care and Training in Cardiac Skills, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Why? Because it was his desire! At some point in time, he had come with a whole plan of building a hospital in Mumbai to Swami. But back then, Swami had postponed the plan, for whatever reason. Now, Swami wanted the first operation to take place after Indulal Ji inaugurated the operation theatre. We thought it was a marvelous idea! But looking at his condition, we were wondering if he would even be able to travel. Swami said not to worry and that he would happily travel and come back. Swami booked a nice little chartered plane. Indulal Ji happily went and came back. Now Darshana Ji was again worried. Swami had said this was his last work. So, is he going to leave now? But the other promise is that he won't leave in the absence of Swami in Muddenahalli. That was the other prayer. And look at the timing. Swami told Darshana Ji in the plane while returning from Mumbai to look after her father while He would go to Kodaikanal and return and He would then take father! Who can tell this? At best, the doctors can tell the time at which the baby will be born. But who can say when a person is going to die?
Swami went to Kodai and came back on May 16. Indulal Ji waited for Him. On May 18, he was no more! Swami later said He had gone to Indulal Ji's house and told him, 'This is Brahmamuhurtha and today is Buddha Poornima. Let us leave!' Swami chose a time, a place, and a date for him to leave because the only thing they asked each other was 'What can I do for you?' This is what the whole relation was all about between them! It's the other way round with most of us.
In Kodaikanal, a sixth standard boy from a Kannada speaking background from Karwar campus when he got an opportunity to speak quoted American President John F Kennedy, "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." And then the boy said, "Let us not ask what Swami can do for us, instead let us ask what we can do for Swami". And Swami was so impressed with this little boy. It was not a prepared speech. It was spontaneous, from the heart, it was real. And that touched every person in the assembly there.
Indulal Ji was one another person who only asked this question. He won't ask about his pains and struggles, his old age, his difficulties. These are the devotees who are going to make this mission happen now, here and through them. Others cannot. When Swami says I depend on you. They are the people He depends on; who would transition from asking What-You-can-do-for-me-Swami to What-can-I-do-for-You-Swami. That is the only thing they want to know. The rest of the things He knows any which ways and He will take care of it. When He has given us another day, another 24 hours, we must do something for Him! And let us do it the way He wants and not the way we want to. That is the kind of people who are the movers and shakers of this mission of Swami. This tribe is increasing.

One very important thing that stands out in my memory of all the things that happened in the last few months is a very beautiful relationship that Indulal Shah Ji and Swami shared. I have been watching him quite closely since 2011 when we met Indulal Ji for the first time when Swami decided to go to Mumbai and talk to him. He was very happy, not just because Swami was there. For Indulal Ji, Swami was always there. He had a different equation with Swami altogether. It was not that he got impressed that Swami is still around and that is why he was gung ho about it. Not at all! The first thing he asked was about the service activities that we had planned to do. When I told him that we are trying to open a hospital in Raipur; that caught his attention! When I told him we are trying to open a school in Gulbarga; that really caught his imagination! He asked me in the very first meeting, how are you able to mobilize the resources? How are you able to get people? His only concern was that. He was not interested in knowing the age of Swami who had appeared (in the subtle form); if Swami was wearing yellow or orange or white robe? How was His hair? He was not concerned. These were the most frequently asked questions when I ever talked about Swami. He asked me how we were planning to run this hospital and what has Swami told you. His concern was only service. That is because he was the foot soldier of Swami at all times since he met Him in 1965. The only concern he had was what he can do for Swami till the end of his life.
Swami had called him for an interview a month or two before his passing. He would ask his daughter or son-in-law to ask Swami what he could do for Swami. How beautiful that thought is. He was 99 plus, all most touching 100. He could not put food in the mouth, he could not turn sides on the bed and yet he had to ask Swami this alone. 'What else Swami wants us to do for Him!'
When Indulal Ji shifted to Muddenahalli almost three years ago, Swami told him he will live for 100 years! Sometimes, the situation was so bad health wise, that it did not appear he would live for 100 years! But Swami said you will live for 100 years and he really lived. And the biggest miracle of love that happened was in April 2019. He suddenly took to illness and from that day onwards, he stopped eating. It was very difficult to feed him. It happens. Old people lose interest in eating; lose interest with the regular life but they are happy and contended within themselves. The children got concerned. They prayed to Swami that he was not eating. Swami beautifully said he has gone into a Yogic state. Swami sent 'Ensure' bottles for him out of love that he should at least sip that because he used to like it. And what flavor? Swami ensured it was strawberry or vanilla, whatever he chooses to have. So much of concern for Indulal Ji!
His daughter and son-in-law tried their best but it was not happening. When Swami was leaving for Fiji and Australia trip they were concerned if Swami will ever see Indulal Ji again. Darshana didi (Indulal's daughter) asked one boon, 'Swami! Whatever happens; make sure that he does not leave this body in your absence in Muddenahalli. All the speakers who participated in the Global Education Conference at Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli which was held from 24-26 May 2019, whenever they got half a minute or a few seconds to interact with Swami said, "Swami! We want to participate in this work (Education). Please guide us on how we can work with You." And Swami was very happy to hear that.
When the first set of interviews started way back in 2014, most of them wanted their new baby to be named, to bless their mother who was ill and to give a date for the inauguration of their new house, wedding and job! But today's interviews have changed. When people walk in, they come with a new project in the field of service in their own countries or wherever they are. And Swami is very happy to meet them because that is the time that is well spent.
In Malaysia, devotees were observing 'Seva Day'. Then Swami said, "It's not Seva Day but 'Save-a-day'! The day you do Seva is the only day that is saved. Every other day is a wasted day. Our day can be saved if we can be of any use to Swami in any which way. Even if I can smile and serve the coffee to the next guest who is arriving and do it with all my heart, all my love, that coffee will transform the person. As Mother Theresa said, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." That is what changes the world; doing small things in our daily life with great love for Swami with the thought that He resides in all and He will enjoy whatever we do, is what will make a difference to the world.
Values based education will succeed; if not today a few years down the line. If Swami has made the Sankalpa, it has to get implemented someday in His own divine time. But what will it do to us? Swami Vivekananda envisaged a system, machinery where people can work out their own salvation. He just wanted to put in place a system which will keep functioning and anybody who participated or involved himself/herself will work out his/her own salvation through the process. These hospitals, educational institutions, Annapoorna Breakfast programme or even volunteerism during events are machineries for salvation. They are springboards of liberation. They are launch pads of self realization. This is what Swami has done out of His immense compassion for us before the sick child, before the uneducated child, before the poor and hungry; because left to ourselves, our own devices, none of us would take interest in doing any Seva; but for Him prodding, pushing, and pulling. We don't do it on our own, not many, not with this intensity at least! He gives us these opportunities and literally pushes us into this so that we work out our own salvation and realize our own selves.
